About Membrane Bio Reactor

Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) Description

A Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is an advanced wastewater treatment technology that combines a biological treatment process (activated sludge) with membrane filtration. The system uses microorganisms to break down organic pollutants and submerged microfiltration or ultrafiltration membranes to separate treated water from suspended solids, bacteria, and other contaminants.

Unlike conventional wastewater treatment plants that rely on secondary clarifiers, MBR systems use membrane modules as a physical barrier, producing exceptionally high-quality effluent suitable for water reuse, industrial applications, irrigation, and safe environmental discharge.

How It Works

  1. Wastewater Inflow Raw wastewater enters the bioreactor tank.
  2. Biological Treatment Microorganisms consume and decompose organic matter and nutrients.
  3. Aeration Air is supplied to maintain biological activity and reduce membrane fouling.
  4. Membrane Filtration Hollow-fiber or flat-sheet membranes filter the mixed liquor, retaining solids and microorganisms.
  5. Treated Water Output Clean, clarified water passes through the membranes and is collected for reuse or discharge.

Key Benefits

  • Superior effluent quality
  • Effective removal of suspended solids and bacteria
  • Smaller footprint compared to conventional systems
  • Reduced sludge production
  • Suitable for water reuse applications
  • Consistent treatment performance
  • High automation and operational reliability

Applications

  • Municipal wastewater treatment plants
  • Industrial effluent treatment
  • Commercial buildings and townships
  • Hotels and resorts
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities
  • Food and beverage industries
  • Water recycling and reuse projects

Typical Output Quality

MBR-treated water typically achieves:

  • Very low suspended solids (TSS)
  • Significant reduction in BOD and COD
  • Excellent pathogen removal
  • High clarity and low turbidity

In summary, a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is a compact, efficient, and sustainable wastewater treatment solution that integrates biological degradation and membrane filtration to produce high-quality treated water for reuse and environmental protection.
